The new version of Leo Tolstoy’s literary epic War and Peace is a co-production between the Weinstein Company and BBC Cymru Wales. The drama was adapted by screenwriter and novelist Andrew Davies, best known for his work on the BBC’s 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice. It stars Lily James, Paul Dano, James Nerton and Gillian Anderson.

It was filmed in Saint Petersburg and also in Latvia and Lithuania. Some of the locations where the most stunning scenes were filmed can be visited in Saint Petersburg on the ‘War and Peace Trail’.

On any Guide For You tour you can be captivated by the views where the episodes of the film were shot.

When you are in Catherine’s Palace, 15 miles south of the centre in Tsarskoe Selo, you can visit the opulent ballroom where Natasha Rostov (Lily James) danced with Prince Andrew (James Norton).

Our professional guides will take you to the rooms in the Hermitage where some of the scenes of the film were shot. They will tell you the story of the powerful Yusupov family and their palace, which is also mentioned in War and Peace.

Exploring the city on the sightseeing tour you will enjoy a stroll along Nevsky Prospect, Saint Petersburg’s main avenue, and visit the glorious Kazan Cathedral. This is where Mikhail Kutuzov, Russia’s military commander in the struggle against Napoleon and a key figure in War and Peace, is buried.

Saint Petersburg is the best place to follow in the footsteps of the fictional Bolkonsky and Rostov families. Our guests will be welcomed and accompanied by their own guides, who will conduct the tours and introduce them to the diverse aspects of Russian history.
